UK Supreme Court issues landmark ruling on legal definition of woman

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom unanimously ruled Wednesday that the legal definition of a woman is someone born biologically female.

TheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedKingdomunanimouslyruledWednesdaythatawomanissomeonebornbiologicallyfemale,amovethatnowexcludestransgenderwomenfromthelegaldefinitionofawoman. Transwomencanbeexcludedfromsomesingle-sexspacesandgroupsundertheU.K.EqualityAct,thefivejudgesofthetopcourtruled.Thesespacesandgroupsincludechangingrooms,homelessshelters,swimmingareasandmedicalorcounselingservicesprovidedonlytowomen. Therulingmeansthatevenatransgenderpersonwithacertificatethatrecognizesthemasfemaleshouldnotbeconsideredawomanforequalitypurposes.
