Hours before they met to decide the fate of President Donald Trump’s effort to unwind temporary deportation protections for Haitian and Syrian nationals, the conservative justices of the Supreme Court were feted by the president at a banquet featuring Britain’s King Charles.
A list of noted guests distributed by the White House ahead of the Tuesday night dinner showed that the Chief Justice John Roberts and five of his colleagues, along with their spouses, attended the event. What was notable about the list of guests was who wasn’t included: Any of the courts three liberal justices.
It isn’t clear whether Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan or Ketanji Brown Jackson were invited and chose not to come, or whether they weren’t invited in the first place. CNN has reached out to the Supreme Court and the White House seeking information about the invitations.
In addition to the oral arguments Wednesday in a major immigration case involving a program called Temporary Protected Status, the court is grappling with the legality of several high-profile Trump policies. That includes two cases challenging the president’s power to unilaterally fire leadership at independent agencies and his order attempting to end birthright citizenship as it’s been understood for more than a century.
It also comes as Trump has ramped up rhetorical pressure on the justices following the court’s decision to invalidate his sweeping emergency tariffs. At one point, Trump said the justices who voted against his tariffs were an embarrassment to their families.
