TheU.S.DepartmentofHomelandSecurity(DHS)saidonTuesdaythatimmigrantsinthecountrymustregisterwiththefederalgovernmentandthatfailingtodosowillresultinfines,potentialimprisonment,orboth.
Thiswouldallowlawenforcementtotrackandcompelillegalimmigrantstoself-deport,whilesavingagencyresourcesthatwouldotherwisebeusedoncarryingoutphysicalremovals,theDHSsaidinastatement.
